University Student denies Sh1.4M fraud charges, freed on Sh300K bail
A Mount Kenya University student has denied all charges of acquiring and using alleged proceeds of crime worth Sh1,479,800 and has been released on a bond of Sh300,000.
Collins Mutuma, from Thika, appeared before Milimani Principal Magistrate Rose Ndumbi, facing allegations that on March 30, 2025, he acquired Sh1,479,800 from a Kingdom Bank account belonging to Interways Works Limited.

If not convicted of acquisition, he faces an alternative charge of knowingly receiving the funds while aware they were stolen.
The prosecution did not oppose bail but asked the court to consider the seriousness of the offence, requesting a mention date to confirm pretrial compliance.
Through his lawyer, Nyamwaro, Mutuma sought reasonable bail, noting he is a student with no independent income and fully supported by his single mother.
The defence highlighted that he had previously been granted Sh200,000 cash bail in October 2025 and has attended all court dates without fail.
“He was arrested yesterday immediately after attending a mention,he is not a flight risk and has been complying with all bail and bond conditions,” Counsel Nyamwaro told the court.

The prosecution alleges that Mutuma transferred Sh250,000 to his own Safaricom M-Pesa account and Sh240,000 to another individual’s account.
The matter is set for pretrial mention on March 4. As with all accused persons, Mutuma is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
