Court grants DCI 21 days to detain murder suspect

A Nairobi court has granted detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) orders to detain a murder suspect for 21 days to allow completion of investigations into the killing of a man in Nairobi’s Ngara area.

In its ruling, the Magistrate’s Court at Milimani presided  by Chief Magistrate Dolphina Alego allowed an application by DCI Central Nairobi, which is investigating the murder of Dickson Gitonga Muriuki, alias Kanyiri, reported at Ngara Police Station.

According to the police, the incident occurred on August 15, 2025, at around 2am at Tsunami footbridge as the deceased was walking towards Nairobi’s Central Business District in the company of Mercy Wanjiku Wambui.

Police allege that the deceased was attacked by Erick Kamande Muthoni, alias Erico, leading to a fight in which Muriuki sustained fatal injuries.

The suspect was arrested on January 5, 2026, and booked at Central Police Station, with detectives telling the court that investigations are at a crucial stage.

In a supporting affidavit sworn by Corporal Antony Kerini, the investigating officer said the suspect has no known fixed place of residence, no identifiable family contacts, and does not own a mobile phone factors police argued increase the risk of absconding if released on bail.

"We are seeking 21 days to enable investigators to complete crucial investigations,” the investigating officer, Antony Karimi, told the court.

The court further heard that the suspect has allegedly expressed willingness to cooperate with investigators by leading police to the murder weapon and to accomplices believed to be hiding in Isiolo and Nanyuki.

Detectives warned that releasing the suspect at this stage could jeopardize investigations, interfere with witnesses, and compromise the recovery of key evidence.

Police also raised security concerns, telling the court that members of the public attempted to lynch the suspect at the time of arrest, forcing officers to fire shots in the air to disperse the crowd.

The prosecution supported the application, urging the court to allow continued detention in the interest of justice and public safety, while assuring the court that investigations would be concluded within the period granted.

The matter will be mentioned on January 27, 2026.
