Man sentenced to 12-month conditional term for stealing railway grills
A Nairobi man, Josephat Kamau Chege, was on Thursday, January 8, 2026, sentenced to 12 months suspended imprisonment for stealing railway grills by the Milimani Law Courts.
Delivering her ruling, Chief Magistrate Dolphina Alego said she had considered Chege’s personal circumstances, explanation, and remorse before passing the sentence.

"The court hereby considers your mitigation,You will serve a 12-month suspended sentence," Magistrate Alego ruled. "You have a right to appeal within 14 days,"the Magistrate added.
The prosecution noted that a pre-sentence report had not been prepared, and the matter had initially been deferred to Monday.

In his mitigation, Chege, 28, told the court that he has two children and earns a living selling tomatoes at a local market.
Chege also admitted agreeing to sell the stolen grills, adding that his 27-year-old wife works as a domestic worker in Muthurwa.
"Nilikua naomba Koti inisaidie. Niliachia bibi Sh 150 na hadi wa leo hawajui mahali niko," Chege told the court.
The prosecution confirmed that the grills had since been returned to the complainant.
After considering his explanation and personal circumstances, the court handed him a 12-month suspended sentence, warning him against committing similar offences.
