Gospel Singer Rachel Wandeto Dies After Acid Attack in Mwiki

A young gospel singer, Rachel Wandeto, has died after succumbing to severe burn injuries caused by a brutal acid attack in Mwiki, Nairobi.

Rachel passed away on Monday morning, May 18, 2026, while receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), where she had been admitted in critical condition following the attack.

According to reports, the singer had recently attracted public attention after going viral for tattooing an image and name of President William Ruto on her body. The incident had sparked mixed reactions online before her tragic death.

She was later attacked on the night of Friday, May 15, 2026, by unknown assailants in the Mwiki, Kasarani area.

The attackers allegedly splashed acid on her before fleeing the scene, leaving her with extensive burns covering nearly 70% of her body.

She was first rushed to Uzima Uhai Hospital shortly after the incident before being referred to KNH for specialized treatment due to the severity of her injuries.

Despite efforts by doctors, she later succumbed to the burns.

Following her death, leaders expressed sorrow and condemned the incident, calling for justice.

Government communicator Dennis Itumbi said the attack had silenced a young artist who expressed herself through music and personal beliefs, stating:

“This is such a painful and unnecessary death. A young Gospel artist has been silenced while carrying nothing but her music, her faith, and her personal political beliefs,” said Dennis Itumbi.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen accompanied by Inspector General Douglas Kanja during their hospital visit on May 18 also condemned the act and assured that action would be taken against those responsible.

“We shall bring the perpetrators of this senseless act to book. Rachel will get justice,” added Kipchumba Murkomen.

Police have since launched investigations into the attack as pressure mounts for arrests and justice.
