Man Accused of Stealing from German Ex-Navy Officer Alleges Assault in Police Arrest

A Nairobi court heard of a case involving Michael Owuor, who is accused of stealing valuables from former German Navy officer Frank Steinberg

Owuor is facing charges under case number MCCR/E366/2025 over allegations that he stole a golden ring, two mobile phones, cash, bank cards and personal documents belonging to Steinberg.

The complainant is said to have hosted him at his Loresho residence for about three months before the alleged incident on March 8, 2025.

The prosecution estimates the total value of the stolen items at close to Sh One million.

During the hearing, Owuor took an active role in cross-examining the investigating officer, questioning how the investigation was conducted and raising concerns over what he described as gaps in the prosecution’s evidence.

He challenged why individuals allegedly linked to the recovered mobile phones had not been called to testify in court.

He also disputed identity-related claims raised during the proceedings, insisting that one of the names connected to a money transfer was not his.

“I am Michael Owuor… You don’t know who this Caleb Onyango is?” he told the court.

The investigating officer confirmed that the accused was Michael Owuor and not Caleb Onyango.

The hearing turned tense when Owuor alleged that he was assaulted during his arrest.

“The complainant paid you guys take me to Karura Forest and beat me thoroughly,” he claimed in court. The investigating officer dismissed the allegation, responding: “No way. No.”

Owuor further alleged that officers confiscated and accessed his mobile phone during the arrest, claims the officer did not substantiate, stating instead that devices recovered during investigations had been traced to individuals linked to the case.

The magistrate directed that the two phones be returned to the complainant, while the accused’s phone be released back to him.

The case will be mentioned on June 23, 2026, before Magistrate Carolyne Nyaguthii Mugo at the Milimani Magistrate’s Court.
