Owuor Followers Claim HIV Healing, Demand Answers from KEMRI Over Test Dispute

Two members of the Ministry of Repentance and Holiness have written to the Ministry of Health and the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) demanding immediate clarification over what they describe as disputed HIV test results.

The demand was made public on May 6, 2026, outside Milimani Law Courts, where the two believers , Millicent Awino and Peter Oyan  claimed they were healed during the Menengai mega crusade in Nakuru.

According to Awino, she claims that she was healed through a televised live broadcast whereas Oyan during a crusade at Menengai in Nakuru.

They were accompanied by their legal team live television led by lawyers Danstan Omari, Cliff Ombeta, and Stanley Kinyanjui, among others.

In a demand notice dated May 6, 2026, the lawyers, acting for Awino and in the public interest, argue that KEMRI’s position contradicts documented medical records and her treatment history under the national HIV programme.

According to the legal team, Awino was diagnosed HIV-positive on September 14, 2023, at Ulungu Dispensary after presenting symptoms consistent with infection.

A confirmatory test at Usigu Health Facility also returned a positive result, leading to her enrolment into care, issuance of a Comprehensive Care Clinic (CCC) card, and initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART), which she reportedly adhered to.

The case took a turn in December 2024 when she sought a fresh test at a different facility in Bondo after attending a televised crusade led by self-proclaimed prophet David Owuor. The results reportedly came back negative.

Her lawyers say she subsequently underwent multiple tests at various facilities, all of which returned negative results, raising concern among health workers.

In 2025, the matter was escalated for further review. A viral load test conducted months after she had stopped ART reportedly showed undetectable levels.

National and county health officials, alongside the National AIDS and STI Control Programme (NASCOP), later verified her treatment history and confirmed she had been managed as an HIV-positive patient within the national system.

Further tests were conducted at KEMRI laboratories in Kisumu in January 2026. However, the lawyers claim the results were not released and that she was repeatedly recalled for additional sampling.

Despite this, KEMRI later issued a letter dated April 20, 2026, stating that there was no evidence she had ever been infected with HIV.

The lawyers argue that the conclusion contradicts Kenya’s HIV testing protocols, which require both screening and confirmatory tests before diagnosis and treatment.

“The people who identify that you are HIV positive are doctors. The people who will confirm that you have been healed are doctors,” the two maintained.

They further cited KEMRI’s communication, stating: “KEMRI now came and said through a letter dated 20th April that our client never had that disease,”lawyers stated

The lawyers insist the matter requires urgent clarification

They maintain that enrolment into ART and issuance of a CCC card cannot occur without a confirmed positive result.

They further warn that the case raises broader concerns about the integrity of the country’s HIV testing system, public trust in health data, and institutional accountability.

Both Awino and Oyan maintain that they were initially diagnosed with HIV/AIDS at government facilities but later tested negative, which they attribute to miraculous healing.
