Former CJ David Maraga Arrested During Protest Over Alleged Parking Facility on Nairobi Park Land

Former Chief Justice David Maraga was on Monday arrested alongside eight other protesters during a demonstration along Lang’ata Road opposing the alleged construction of a parking facility on a section of Nairobi park land.

The group was protesting against what they claim is a plan to convert approximately 88 acres of the park into a parking space without adequate public participation.

According to the demonstrators, the proposed development threatens one of Nairobi’s key green spaces and raises concerns about the protection of public land.

They argue that the project is being undertaken without sufficient public consultation, contrary to constitutional requirements.

The protesters maintains that they had gathered peacefully to voice their opposition to the alleged conversion of part of the park into a parking facility and to demand transparency regarding the project.

Speaking after the arrests, activist Njeri Mwangi claimed that the demonstrators were conducting a peaceful protest when men believed to be police officers in civilian clothing arrived and took Maraga and the other protesters into custody.

She further stated that those arrested had not been informed of any charges at the time of their detention and that supporters were still awaiting clarification from authorities regarding the next course of action.

According to the activists, the protest is aimed at safeguarding public land and preserving green spaces from developments they believe have not undergone adequate public participation or environmental scrutiny.

"We will continue opposing the project because it is not right to build a parking facility there,we will continue resisting the construction and defending the park," said Mwangi.

Reports indicate that the nine protesters among them United Green movement leader David Maraga have since been booked at Lang’ata Police Station, where they remain as they await communication on any charges that may be preferred against them and whether they will be arraigned in court.

Police had not issued an official statement on the arrests by the time of publication, nor had they disclosed any charges against the detained protesters.
