Rongai MP Aspirant Seeks Apology, Sh50 Million Over Alleged Circumcision Remarks
Rongai parliamentary aspirant Mercy Chebet Chelel has demanded a public apology, retraction, and Sh50 million in damages from fellow aspirant Tonny Kipkurui Wendot over remarks she alleges that she could not hold a political seat because she had not undergone circumcision.
According to a demand letter, the statements allegedly made in the Kalenjin language were defamatory and discriminatory, questioning her suitability to contest for the Rongai parliamentary seat based on circumcision-related cultural considerations.
"Targeting aspirants that they cannot contest because they have never been circumcised,Who has tested whether she's circumcised or she's not?"lawyer asked.

Through her lawyers led by advocate Danstan Omari, Chelel claims the remarks were made during a fundraising event held on May 24, 2026, in Menengai West Ward, Rongai Constituency.
Chelel’s legal team argues that the statements demeaned her as a woman, portrayed her as unfit for leadership, and undermined her standing among voters.
They further contend that the remarks amounted to discrimination against women seeking elective office and violated constitutional principles on equality, dignity, and non-discrimination.
The demand letter also accuses Wendot of orchestrating acts of intimidation against Chelel’s supporters amid rising political competition in the constituency.
The lawyers allege that on May 26, 2026, individuals disrupted a funeral gathering attended by Chelel while she was addressing mourners, claiming the incident was politically motivated.
Chelel’s advocates maintain that any promotion of female genital mutilation, or suggestions that women are unfit for leadership due to cultural practice.
She further adds that that would be contrary to the Constitution and national values that protect against discrimination and harmful traditional practices.
"Whether she's circumcised or she's not circumcised, is it a criteria under the IEBC regulations for one to contest?"counsel asked.
As part of the demand, the lawyers want Wendot to publicly acknowledge the alleged remarks, issue an unequivocal apology within seven days, and compensate Chelel with Sh50 million for the alleged damage to her reputation, public image, and political career.
The lawyers have warned that failure to comply within the stipulated period could result in legal action against the aspiring legislator.
Wendot has yet to publicly respond to the allegations contained in the demand letter.
